Crystal Donor Recognition/Art Wall in the Jean & Charles Schulz Information Center
What you see here at the 2nd floor crossroads area of the new state-of-the-art Schulz Information Center is a series of polished, etched and deep carved crystal Donor and art panels. The panels were specially commissioned by the University to honor the generous community of supporters to the Library.
The series is comprised of 8 double sets of art and name panels that show an artistic, chronological representation of moments in history of how humankind has communicated non-verbally to one another. Moving from the left to right through time one sees:
| | Panel 1 | |
Cave art showing humankind's first signs and symbols including
pigmented hand prints
| | Panel 2 |
A section of the highly significant Rosetta Stone with its symbols and a section of Egyptian stone portrait carving
| | Panel 3 |
A section of illuminated manuscript music notation
| | Panel 4 |
A collage of different handwritings and calligraphy and development of letterforms. This includes a bit of Leonard DaVinci's intriguing backward handwriting signature
| | Panel 5 |
An antique hand drawn rancher's map of Sonoma County from the
Library's special collection
| | Panel 6 |
A collage of Jack London's writing including letters, his signature,
inscriptions, and the Wolf bookplate from inside his book covers. This also is from the Library special collections
| | Panel 7 |
A collage of antique handbills and public media news prints from
the Library's special collections
| | Panel 8 |
The last panel flows into the future in the digital age,
showing computer language
|
 | The designers at Amri Studio, Santa Rosa, CA, worked with the Library staff and their special collections, unique to Sonoma State University, to pick exciting graphic images, which visually symbolize our learning and our written communications through time.
The important Donors are V-carved or chisel cut into the back of the crystal with monument style dimensional lettering and are listed from left to right in Donor giving categories by size. These important and generous participants in the success of the Library are honored with an elegant and artistic presentation and by the inspirational quotations on each panel highlighting love of learning and involvement.
